The Honda RA272 is a single-seater that participated in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1965. The Japanese manufacturer made its debut in 1964 with the RA271 in some races. Engineers Yoshio Nakamura and Shoichi Sano improved the new car by making it 25 kg lighter. At the wheel, in addition to Ronnie Bucknum, the Japanese team joined another American, Richie Ginther. Richie Ginther with the Honda RA272 came seventh in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1965, bringing the Japanese car to success.

After missing the first Grand Prix in South Africa, the RA272 debuted in Monte Carlo. During the season the car proved to be very fast in practice, but during the race it suffered many retreats. In Belgium, Ginther crossed the finish line in sixth place, winning the first point for Honda. With the world championship now won by Clark with the Lotus 33, in the last seasonal race in Mexico, both riders exploited the potential of the Japanese engine that did not suffer from the altitude of the circuit unlike the European engines. Ginther won and was the first success of the Japanese team, while Bucknum obtained the fifth position.
