LOTUS – FORD COSWORTH 81 n.12
The Lotus – Ford Cosworth 81 is a car that participated in the Formula 1 World Championship in 1980. The English team after the victory of the world in 1978 with the Lotus 79, failed to repeat itself the following year with the Lotus 80. Colin Chapman and Martin Ogilvie planned for the new season a much more traditional car that exploited the ground effect, but the excessive downforce created many bumps on the track. The car was sponsored with the Essex brand. Elio De Angelis with the Lotus – Ford Cosworth 81 n.12 arrived seventh in the 1980 Formula 1 World Championship, achieving a second place as best result.
The Italian driver scored points four times in the season and in the Brazilian Grand Prix finished second behind Rene Arnoux’s Renault RE20 n.16. Together with team-mate Mario Andretti, they brought Lotus at the end of the season to fifth place in the constructors’ championship won by Williams FW07B and world champion Alan Jones.
